L3 Westwood, Inhofe, Secretary Burke Announce DOD Contract Award, New Jobs in Broken Arrow
OKLAHOMA, April 19, 2013
BROKEN ARROW – U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today joined Sharon Burke, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Operational Energy Plans and Programs, to announce a Department of Defense contract awarded to L3 Westwood for their Load Demand Start Stop (LDSS) microgrid system.
"Advancements in defense technologies continue to decrease the level of risk our servicemembers face while defending global U.S. interests," said Inhofe. "L3 Westwood's Load Demand Start Stop system will reduce fuel usage by up to 50 percent, reduce overall maintenance cost, enhance combat capability, and lessen combat risk of our troops overseas. Furthermore, at a time when our Defense Department is facing unprecedented budget cuts, this technology will be key to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our military. I am proud of the work L3 Westwood is doing and the fact that workers in Oklahoma will be directly responsible for reducing risk to our service men and women. Their continued support of our Armed Services is appreciated by me and all Oklahomans."
"L3 Westwood is proud to support our customers and troops with our new Load Demand Start Stop system. The LDSS delivers more than 30 percent fuel savings, which ultimately leads to reduced fuel convoys and deliveries," said Clayton McClain, president of L3 Westwood. "Most importantly, our new green technology significantly reduces fuel consumption, and will reduce maintenance costs by extending the life of existing equipment."
Secretary Burke added, "I've met with some of our young troops who have been injured in attacks while they were moving fuel around the battlefield. If we can reduce those risks, we have an obligation to try. These microgrids help."
The $13.5 million contract is for 113 systems that will create almost 20,000 labor hours for L3 Westwood and bring new high-skilled jobs to the Broken Arrow manufacturing facility.
