The use of powerful Versa Module Europa (VMAE) processors in our DAUs allows each unit to operate completely independently of all other units to provide maximum possibility survivability. The DAUs host all control system monitoring and automation sequences to ensure that failures in the operator stations do not result in loss of functionality.

Our engineers design redundancy into all vital control system interfaces to ensure that major plant equipment remains fully operational in the event of an accident. The system is designed so that all system-wide control sequences are duplicated in multiple DAUs with automatic transfer to ensure that functions are not lost due to a single-unit failure.

In addition to providing clear and concise operator displays, our display systems includes a number of features that improve plant operation:

  • Rigorous transfer of control for subsystem operation
  • Extensive, modifiable alarm filtering and prevent functions to reduce false alarms
  • Multiple operator-configurable warning and alarm thresholds
  • Operator administration functions, including passwords and restriction of control capability to individual operators
  • Data logs and trend analysis

Auxiliary and Patrol Craft Control Systems

When full naval specification systems are not required, we retain our proven operator display system but use industrial programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or PCs for control and data acquisition. We configure system architectures as distributed control systems or with centralized redundant processors. For smaller systems, a PC-with-remote-I/O solution may be used to eliminate the need for large DAU enclosures.

Our selection of a technical solution is based on a systems-engineered analysis of program requirements and a trade-off of control system and installation costs. Regardless of the selected implementation, systems comply with all applicable program and regulatory requirements.

The Steering Gear Actuation System (SGAS) is an all-electric dual-rudder control system comprising three motors, drive electronics for the motors, rudder stock and gearing, and a control system.

The Water Mist Control System provides local control and monitoring of onboard water misting systems used for firefighting within machinery spaces. The system comprises damage control and supervisory panels that communicate status and commands over a fiber-optic local area network.

Generator Control Unit (GCU)

The GCU cabinet contains various signal converters, a three-rack PLC, 15-inch touchscreen or conventional monitor with an industrial computer, KATO generator control box and Woodward regulator. The GCU provides automatic and manual control of a ship's generators and acts as a go-between for a KATO generator's control box and a Woodward regulator. The GCU cabinet monitors all essential diesel and generator parameters, displaying this data on a touchscreen or monitor, and also providing it externally through a serial modbus connection. The cabinet has undergone EMI and shock testing and is fully qualified.

Our DAUs provide a common interface for a wide range of data formats used in shipboard engineering and control systems. The DAU conditions and translates these varied formats to maximize integration of ship control functions. Whistle Timer

The L3 Henschel Whistle Timer is designed to automatically control a ship's whistle sequences during specific conditions. The unit has selectable whistle timer sequences that convey the navigational or maneuvering status of the ship. The Whistle Timer also operates manually for at-will signaling or to interrupt automatic operation and includes a man overboard (MOB) function that sounds a whistle sequence and drives external MOB indicators. The Whistle Timer complies with United States Coast Guard COLREGS rules governing sequence, cycle and length of whistle blasts.
